About
the Artist
In his new
exhibit entitled ‘Eventide:
Images from the Edge,’ Kenneth Ramsley brings extensive
space-based camera design and image processing experience to his art
As
a Visiting Investigator in
the Division of Engineering at Brown
University, Mr.
Ramsley mentors and
lectures on topics related to advanced
spacecraft design and orbital mechanics. Prior to
this, he
was Chief Engineer
overseeing electronics, software, and optical engineering for a maker
of earth orbiting micro satellites, including five
spacecraft presently on orbit with significant
design content from Mr. Ramsley.
At various
other times Mr. Ramsley pursues
creative pastimes ranging from amateur telescope making and model
rocketry to storytelling and the design of 3D interactive video games.
Yet the pastime most central to his creative vision has always been photography—or what Mr.
Ramsley calls quantum art for
its reference to the quantum nature of light and the numeric elements
of digital imaging.
“For the Eventide exhibit
I’ve combined the science of
orbital map-making with everyday digital camera imaging methods,”
Mr.
Ramsley explains. “In theory there’s nothing new - physics is physics - yet
some of these combinations are unique and many have never been tried in
traditional photography or in space science.
What is the hardest part? – “A simple temptation,”
says Mr. Ramsley.
“At the cutting-edge of image processing and printmaking I face
defeat in every decision I make, and the temptation
is to avoid this defeat—to play it safe along a winding path of
conventional wisdom. Yet the truest path of creative vision is straight, and the solution is to
plow this path on a line—trusting
my experience and intuition as I seek an unimpeachable result. In
the end I never reach perfection, but I often overstep my expectations.
And that is good enough."
